DIRECTORS NOTE

Christmastime is a season full of traditions, the kind that return year after year whether we’re ready or not. There are school programs, work parties, last-minute shopping, endless errands, and the gatherings with family and friends that make December feel like December. These rituals become the backdrop of our childhoods and the memories we continue to carry as adults.

In my family, one of those traditions has always been the 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story. Every Christmas Eve, the TV switches to that channel and stays there from the moment the presents start getting wrapped to the moment we finally get some sleep to the moment we wake up far too early. For us, it isn’t just part of Christmas, it is Christmas. It’s the warm, familiar soundtrack playing in the background of all our holiday chaos.

One of my favorite things about the musical version is how much more fully we get to know these beloved characters. The Old Man and Mother become more human, people with quirks shaped by their insecurities, their hopes, and their quiet strengths. They feel less like exaggerated figures from a movie and more like the real adults many of us eventually recognize from our own childhoods: imperfect, doing their best, and loving us in ways we only understand later.

The musical also gives fresh meaning to the Old Man’s “Major Award.” For years, the leg lamp was just a joke. But now I see it differently. I imagine he’s a man who doesn’t completely understand his own worth, and suddenly he wins something that makes him feel important and seen. Losing it wasn’t really about a lamp. It was about losing that validation. And yet, by the end of the show, he discovers something better: the realization that his true “Major Award” is his family, their love, and the quiet pride of being a father and a husband.

There’s a moment in the show when Jean Shepherd reflects, “Back in those days you never asked yourself, ‘Do my parents love me?’… When they said ‘Don’t run with scissors’ or ‘button your coat’ or ‘you’ll shoot your eye out,’ maybe they didn’t even know it—but that’s what it was, love.” To me, that line captures the heart of A Christmas Story. Amid the laughter, the nostalgia, the chaos and charm, this story is really about the everyday ways families show their love, often without realizing it.

Thank you for joining us tonight and sharing this holiday tradition with us. I hope it brings back memories of your own childhood Christmases and adds a little extra warmth to your season.

Happy holidays,

Kody Rash
